The Provident Story
Where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going
1880: Provident Clothing & Supply Co Ltd is founded in Bradford, West Yorkshire, by Joshua Kelley Waddilove. The mission is to help working-class families provide for themselves through the use of vouchers. These are exchanged for goods in local shops, and paid for in affordable instalments.
1920: Provident is now a nationwide business with over 9,000 Agents operating from Bradford Head Office.
1962: Company floats on the stock market under the name Provident Financial plc, followed by period of growth as new products are introduced to meet changing needs.
1990s:Home Credit Service is launched overseas, and now operates in many countries worldwide.
2003: Vanquis Bank starts trading, and is now a successful credit card provider to over 1 million customers in the UK. Vanquis Bank has now started taking retail deposits.
2007: Provident sells its motor insurance business, and de-merges its international business as a separately listed company. This frees us to focus on meeting the needs of non-standard credit customers in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
2010: Provident moves to a brand new, purpose-built office in the heart of Bradford.
2013: Provident launches an exciting new online product, Satsuma Loans. This allows loans to be paid straight into customers’ bank accounts.
And in the future?
We’ve got a clear and determined strategy for the future, with the leadership and direction we need to make it happen. We’re already entering into a more digital-minded relationship with our customers and we’re hugely excited about building on that. To make absolutely sure we make the most of the many superb opportunities available to us, we’re committed to finding, keeping and developing the very best people – people who will share our vision, bring us their talent and energy, and come with us as we grow.
Together we’ll continue to seek and develop new ways of making life better for millions of customers, and we’re delighted to be living through a time of great change and evolution for Provident.
